Black tie = bow tie, regardless of your politics. It would not be correct to say long ties have become acceptable any more than it would be true to say that mugging is all the rage. Both are ugly, unavoidable truths of modern urban living. The only difference is that wearing long ties in place of pulling oneself together and doing black tie properly is not punishable by a prison term. Not yet, anyway.
